Tips & FAQ

How do I prepare for class?

Wear comfortable work-out attire. Dance shoes and socks. No gum or jewelry. If your hair is long, have it pulled back and out of your face. Bring a bottle of water and be ready to learn and have fun!

Does our school hold a recital at the end of the school year?

The Mulcahy Academy does not hold a traditional recital at the end of the school year. Instead, we have an annual Ceili. The Ceili is held in the Spring at the Irish American Home Society in Glastonbury. At our Ceili we have a live Irish Band, dancing, food and a performance by all of our students. It is a wonderful event that you and your family will not want to miss!

How much should I practice at home?

All dancers, whether competing or just performing, should practice at home. Practice time varies by level. Please check with Miss. Erin to find out how much time is needed for practice.

Where can I get music for my child(ren) to practice at home?

Fortunately there are a ton of options available online and through iTunes. Simply search for “Beginner’s Reel”, “Light Jigs” and “Beginner’s Slip Jigs” and you will find plenty of options.

How do I build a practice stage at home for hard shoe dances?

The easiest way to build a practice floor at home is to purchase dri-core boards at your local home improvement store. These boards have plywood on the top and plastic on the bottom. They are sold in 2×2 squares and can be connected together using liquid nail. Add an inexpensive piece of carpet padding underneath for cushion to help protect your child’s legs. The floor can be expanded as needed by purchasing additional boards. The minimum recommended floor is 8×8.

What is a Feis?

A Feis is a competition. Please see the Upcoming Feiseanna below for registration information. If your child is interested in competing, please consult with Miss. Erin to determine proper placement for Feis registration. Parent’s are responsible for Feis registration and bringing their child(ren) to a Feis.

What is Feiseanna?

It’s just the plural form of Feis.

What should I bring to a Feis?

Every Feis is different. The time you will spend at a Feis depends on the number of dances that your child(ren) is competing in, and his/her level. A schedule is typically available online at the Feis website the Wednesday prior to the Feis.

Here’s what you should bring:

  • Healthy Snacks

  • Chairs (a lot of feiseanna are held in high schools – a chair for the hallway to camp out between dances is helpful)

  • Costume, socks and shoes

  • Hair Spray

  • Bobby Pins

  • Safety Pins

  • Band-Aids

How do I get the results from the Feis?

Most feiseanna will post the results within an hour of the dance in a results area. Some feiseanna will email you the results as well, along with comments from the judge. These results with comments are referred to as “marks”. Be sure to ask at the feis how you can get your marks. Sometimes you will be required to fill out a form and pay a small fee ($3 – $5) for the marks. Once received, be sure to share the marks with Miss. Erin!
